The Jurva region in Western Finland has a long tradition in decorative wood carving and manufacturing period style furniture. However, sales are declining for the old-fashioned furniture and companies and makers are struggling to find new applications for the labour-intensive craft of wood carving.

Fossil is a tribute to this unique tradition which is in danger of becoming extinct. One of the aims of this project was to explore new possibilities for decorative wood carving in contemporary furniture design and making.

The chair is made of solid birch and treated with transparent wood wax. Fossil has been exhibited at the Habitare design fair in Helsinki, Finland.
